The Brief

Differentiate YouTube from traditional social media and build positive brand perception among policymakers by showcasing the platform’s role as a cultural engine and net contributor to the global music ecosystem.

The Idea

Capitalize on the bipartisan PEACE Through Music Diplomacy Act by establishing YouTube as the exclusive tech title sponsor of the State Department’s Global Music Diplomacy Initiative—pairing high-level diplomatic milestones with intimate, creator- and artist-led experiences across Washington, D.C. and priority international markets.

The Experience

Headlined the State Department Kickoff Gala: Integrated YouTube into the heart of the official State Department launch—securing iconic performers including Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, jazz legend Herbie Hancock, and Tony Award winner Myles Frost, while positioning Global Head of Music Lyor Cohen as the sole private-sector speaker alongside Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Debuted the U.S. Global Music Ambassadors in the Treaty Room: Co-hosted a historic, livestreamed ceremony in the State Department’s Treaty Room to unveil an inaugural roster of 11 U.S. Global Music Ambassadors—featuring remarks from Secretary Blinken, Lyor Cohen, Chuck D, and Lainey Wilson, as well as a private tour and intimate gathering inside the Secretary’s office.

Hosted Celebratory YouTube Receptions: Paired both the kickoff gala and the Ambassador debut with vibrant, YouTube-hosted receptions right next door—creating an informal setting to connect directly with 400+ D.C. policymakers, Members of Congress, and White House officials. Guests mingled with artists like Dave Grohl after the kickoff gala, and celebrated the newly inducted Ambassadors at the debut reception with official certificate presentations and a live performance by 17-year-old guitar prodigy and Music Ambassador Grace Bowers.

Scaled Cultural Diplomacy Across Global Priority Markets: Expanded the partnership into a modular international program across Brazil, Canada, and Australia—anchoring a bilateral reception with the U.S. Ambassador in Brasília ahead of the G20, a producer panel and artist showcase at Canadian Music Week in Toronto, and a cross-cultural hip-hop session at SXSW Sydney.

The Impact

Established a partnership hailed by the U.S. Secretary of State as “transformational” while advancing core policy and reputation goals across four countries.
